Roof Cleaning in Great Bentley, Essex

The job

Colchester Exterior Cleaning was called to this property in Great Bentley, Essex, where years of organic growth and staining had significantly changed the appearance of the roof.

Looking at the before photographs, you could be forgiven for thinking the roof tiles were naturally dark brown. In reality, there was a lovely red roof hiding underneath!

The homeowner wanted to bring the roof back to its best while ensuring the cleaning method used was suitable for the tiles.

Choosing the right cleaning method

One of the things we always say at CEC is that no two roofs are exactly the same.

The type of tile, condition of the roof and level of organic growth all need to be considered before deciding on the most appropriate cleaning method.

For this particular property, we chose a low-pressure, medium-heat cleaning method.

The combination of heat and specialist equipment allowed us to remove the accumulated organic growth and staining effectively without relying on aggressive high pressure.

The transformation

This was one of those jobs where the transformation became apparent almost immediately.

As we worked across the roof section by section, the original red tiles began to emerge from underneath years of build-up.

Our photograph taken partway through the clean captures this perfectly — with the freshly cleaned red tiles sitting directly alongside the untreated area.

It’s a great demonstration of just how much organic growth can alter the appearance of a roof over time.

Finishing with a biocide treatment

Once the roof had been cleaned, we followed the process with a professional biocide treatment.

This targets remaining organic growth and helps to inhibit regrowth, allowing the roof to continue benefiting from the treatment after the initial clean has been completed.

So while the immediate before-and-after transformation was impressive, the treatment is an important part of the overall roof-cleaning process too.

The result

The finished roof was almost unrecognisable from where we started.

Years of dark staining and organic build-up had been removed, revealing the property’s original red roof tiles and completely refreshing the appearance of the home.

For us, this particular job is also a great example of something that’s central to the way we work at CEC:

Roof cleaning isn’t about using the same method on every property. It’s about assessing the roof and choosing the right method for the job.
